I will never forget the first time I visited the Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. I arrived at the Agra airport—a military facility off limits to commercial flights—via private jet with a group of travelers on an around the world program that I had helped organize and I could feel the excitement of visiting the Taj building inside me.
The Taj Mahal was featured prominently in magazines I read and television programs I watched growing up. Because the build up to see this monument had spanned a lifetime I wondered if the monument might prove disappointing. I need not have worried. Visiting the Taj Mahal first in 2007 and again in December 2010 proved to be a larger-than-life experience each time. I asked my guide in December if he ever tired of seeing the Taj Mahal. He responded he had seen it hundreds of times and each time was just as surreal as the previous one.
Of course, India has much more on offer than just the Taj Mahal. From trekking in Ladākh in the far north of Jammu and Kashmir to textile shopping in Johdpur, Rajasthan, to cruising in a thatched-roof traditional kettuvallam houseboat in the Kerala backwaters, India offers an unending stream of history, culture, languages, food and fascinating people (over 1 billion).
